ISK Guide: Vol 1 – Available to pre-order

As most of you know, we released the ISK 3.0 Guide in February as a free download – to huge critical acclaim. [ISK = Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase]. This is the exhaustive manual which EVE has been crying out for since 2003!

Since the release of that free PDF edition, we’ve been inundated with requests for a printed version, a physical product you can hold, pick up and refer to either AFK or while playing the game. We’ve listened, and we’ve responded.

So here it is; ISK Volume 1 as a physical product is now available to pre-order. This monumental near 400 page wiro-bound volume covers everything there is to know about EVE – whether you’re on a 14-day trial account or you’re an experienced long-termer. As a special offer for the early birds among you, there’s even a $5 discount for all pre-orders; in order to receive the discount you MUST apply the code ISK305. If you don’t see the discount being applied immediately, check again before completing your order.

The pre-order period (and therefore the $5 discount) lasts until April 14th. Click here and we’ll take you right along to the Store…

  2. Preordered!
Can we safely assume that with the preorder offer ending on April 14th that that is when the preordered copies will start being posted out?

  3. I have peordered it a few days ago when it was still named “ISK 3.0 Lite” in the EVE store.
    “Status: Waiting to Ship”

Does this name-chance to “Volume1” chances anything for me ?

  4. Hi,

The name change doesn’t affect your order, it’s still the same book!

  5. The name change:
Lite – Made me think that I was missing out on something, that i’d bought the cheap option (with adverts)
Volume 1 – Makes me think its incomplete and that im only buying part of a series.

    Did you consider “Edition”?

  6. What is the difference between this “thing” and future planned “things” of ISK. I don’t want to buy this if a “Super Awesome > 9000” version comes out in 2 months.

I think we should know what we are signing up for since you already have the next “thing” planned.

    * “thing” because it was “lite” and now its “Version1”

  7. That plan has changed a little bit.

Instead of ‘lite’ and expanded ‘premium’ editions, we will be publishing two separate print volumes. There are a few reasons, but the main one is that after printing prototype copies of the lite edition, we realized it’s anything but light. As for the new ‘Premium’ chapters that are in development, they are almost certain to weigh in at another 350-400 pages – another guide in themselves!

Ostensibly then, Vol.1 is the current lite edition (although it will be fully updated for Incursion 1.4), the print edition of which, as previewed at Fanfest, is available now on pre-order from the EVE Store for $35. If you apply the checkout code ISK305 during the pre-order period (until April 14th) you will enjoy a $5 discount on your order. As with EON magazine, shipping is from the UK and costs $10 to UK addresses and $15 to all other countries. At 1.5kg it’s a weighty beast.

For those that visited us at Fanfest to talk about the guide, thank you all for your valuable comments. We will be going for a wiro-bound edition, but with more substantial rings and thicker cover stock. The prototypes held up pretty well after three days of near-constant thumbing by hundreds of people, but we will make it sturdier so it can endure the rigours of the modern desktop environment.

The free PDF version will remain free, but will be available as both a ‘Double Page Spread’ version and a ‘Single Page’ version, by popular demand.

ISK Vol.2 will focus exclusively on PvP in all its various forms. When we say all forms, we mean of course combat forms. It will be a very comprehensive manual for all levels of ship-to-ship combat, from low-sec piracy to null-sec starbase sieges and fleet engagements, aimed at everyone from the rank-and-file grunt to the high-level fleet commander. It will include guides for all the combat hull types.

We will announce availability of Vol.2 in a few weeks. It will almost certainly weigh in the same and cost the same as Vol.1 (with the same pre-order discount). There will be a digital version of Vol.2 but it will not be free. PvP content is pretty good in Vol 1 already, so you shouldn’t feel short-changed. In Vol.2 it will be more focused around roles and various tactical situations and will be very exhaustive.

This has me confused, so you are doing another version of the ISK Guide with the premium chapters added? If so when? I’m starting to wish I hadn’t been so hasty in pre-ordering now.

  9. Hi,

“This has me confused, so you are doing another version of the ISK Guide with the premium chapters added? If so when? I’m starting to wish I hadn’t been so hasty in pre-ordering now.”

The original plan was: we make the lite and a premium version.

    The plan was:
    Lite: The current content
Premium: The current content + a “pvp guide”

    Title: Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase [ISK] – Volume 1
Content: Introduction, mining, ship-fitting, PI, R&D, manufacturing, production, trade, agents, 0.0 life, exploration, starbases
Format: Digital download pdf & print
    Pages: 400 approx
Availability: pdf (out now – update pending) – print (late-April 2011)
Price: pdf (free), print ($35 + mailing – pre-order discount available)
    EVE version: Incursion 1.4.1

    Title: Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase [ISK] – Volume 2
Content: PvP basics, PvP by system security, PvP by fleet roles, fitting for PvP, PvP by fleet size, tanking in theory and practise, weapons, EW, logistics, ship guides
Format: Digital download pdf & print
    Pages: 400 approx
Availability: pdf (summer 2011) – print (summer 2011)
Price: pdf (<$30 – TBC), print ($35 approx – TBC)
    EVE version: TBD

If we would stay with the original "premium" content version, then the printed guide would be more than 900 pages which is too big for release (and the printed version would be too expensive.)

If everything goes right, there should be a Dev Blog in a few days (i hope sooner than usual soon™):)

  10. Thanks for the reply, that clears things up perfectly. My concerns have been abeited :P

If I could make a slight suggestion though…
After looking through the PDF version I was suprised to see the omission of 2 basic things.
A ship chart, one which gives you the basic stats on each of the ships. Even if this was just an simple table it would have been a useful inclusion.
The other was a basic map, I know you guys sell another product which has the maps in detail, but one with just the system name, sec rating and the soverignty on it would be been good, it would old take up a few pages and would have been a great help, my desk space is limited so just have 1 ultimate reference book on it would have been nice.

  11. PS oh and an index would be good too :D

    Posted by Liosa | April 11, 2011, 11:19 am
  17. It’s on the same page where you enter your payment details.

  19. For people who pre-ordered, when will the guide actually ship? I haven’t heard anything about it since I ordered a month or so ago. Any news? Thanks!

  20. Anyone know yet when ISK the Guide is going to ship for sure?

Posted by Randy Price | May 15, 2011, 10:44 pm
  21. In the same situation here. I have still not received my guide which they were quick enough to take payment for back in April.

I haven’t heard a thing from them since they said the e-mail informing us that the item was shipped was a mistake. I even sent them an e-mail at the beginning of May but no response.

I see the item is now available on the store so am wondering why those of us who pre-orderd have still not received ours.

Any news from anyone who has recieved theirs would be great.

  22. According to http://eonmagazine.net/2011/05/27/isk-vol-1-is-here/ which was posted 3 days ago, they just got them and are shipping them as fast as possible.

  23. I can categorically confirm that all orders for ISK Vol.1 will be despatched tomorrow – 31st May. We finally received the stock from the printers and have spent all weekend packing and bagging. To all who pre-ordered, thank you for your patience and support of ISK Vol.1 – you won’t be disappointed with the guide.

  24. Thankyou Ian, that’s really good news :)

  25. Hi Ian,

Not sure if you are still viewing these comments. I just wanted to say I have had a chance to have a quick look through the guide and want to congratulate everyone involved.

It’s full of great information and also very beautifully presented.

    Definitely worth the wait :)
